Task 5: Magazine Newsstand task / Distribution of Magazines

Task 5

Part A-

For this task, I decided to go to a local newsagent as I thought that they would have more magazines than a normal supermarket, as newsagents would sell more magazines than a supermarket.
In this newsagent, I first see the different magazines they have on different shelves. On the bottom shelf, they have childrens magazines, on the shelf above that they have lifestyle magazines and also soap magazines full of gossip. The shelf above that is known as the eyeline shelf and It has all music/mainstream media magazines. When looking at this shelf, I needed to consider the layout.
Typically the method of organising magazines where very competitive and publishers fought to have their magazine on the eyeline shelf and at the front. Previously, shop owners would measure 12cm between each magazine so that the customers could see the teasers/cover lines, but in this news agent this was not the case. I ask the shop owner what was the method of the organisation of the magazines on the eyeline shelf and he said, that is no longer about the competitiveness of the different publishers, but its about merchandising the best sellers, meaning that they promote the magazines that customers normally buy from this news agent.
I found that the magazines that customers normally buy are XXL and MOJO. These magazines have been put right in the middle of the eyeline shelf and have been placed right at the front. I also noticed that while other magazines only have 2 or three copies in the shop, XXL and MOJO have several copies along the eyeline shelf.

Part B-

distribution methods

For the distribution methods I have chosen to use the magazine XXL as this was one of the main magazines in this newsagent.
For this magazine, it does not only have a paper version, but it uses many other media technologies to appeal to its main target audience. As XXL's main target audience lays in the age category from 20-29 its uses mainstream technology to reach them. One media technology they use is a website, which allows the target audience to view the articles online while they browse the internet.

They also have an app which allows the target audience to have the e-mag on the go.

Task 4: Preliminary Task Audience Feedback & Evaluation

Evaluation for Task Three

For my front cover, I believe that this was a really good piece of work. The image I for used the front cover was taken at a medium shot, which was specifically required for me to do. As I had to construct the front cover on photoshop, I had to manipulate the image, making it fit the actual A4 page. Furthermore, my cover lines and my masthead was done really well as it complemented the overall colour scheme and the masthead was the largest writing on the page, which is typically found in all existing magazines. I also included the cost and a barcode on my front cover. What I need to improve  for my front cover is the colour scheme. Typically in existing magazines, they normally use a three coloured colour scheme which creates a consistent house style, however I have only used two colours, which are red and white. Moreover, I need to improve the general layout of the front cover as I believe that the writing is quite close together; I should used more of the space and play around with different font sizes.
For my contents page, I believe that my design was quite simple, but it was straight to the point as it did not have to much colours within it to distract the reader. It follows the same colour scheme as the front cover (red and white), but the contents page does contain black within its colour scheme. In doing this task i had to work on InDesign, which was pretty easy to handle and operate, which allowed me to work efficiently and create my contents page. The things that I need to improve on my contents page is the font style, the font for the contents page and the front cover are different, which is a problem as all font needs to be consistent- This was highlighted by my feedback partner. Also, for future projects I need to improve the quality of my images as some images look slightly stretched and some look squashed. Overall I believe this was a good piece of work as I had a clear plan which i followed which allowed me to create this front cover and contents page.

Three points to improve:
- Use more of the given space
- Always have a three coloured colour scheme
- Get more practice of using photoshop
